Colossians: Everything is from & for Christ
The message from this past Sunday (6 August 2023) was unique for a couple reasons. First and foremost, the obvious, I’m not speaking from my usual outdoor pulpit in South Park (haha!). We had one Sunday in 2023 in which we knew our usual meeting places in South Park were not available. Instead of skipping church yesterday, we opted to cram our entire congregation into a nearby home of our church families. We enjoyed an amazing house church service complete with one of the best Sunday brunches ever.
The second reason it’s unique is that I spent exploring a poem Paul wrote in the midst of a letter to the church in Colossae. When we think of Paul’s letters, we think of long theological treatises arguing for the Lordship of Jesus Christ from a Jewish or Gentile perspective; rarely do we think about poetry and song. There are multiple examples of poetry in Paul’s letters and this particular section of Colossians 1 is one of them. In this particular poem, Paul makes multiple theological arguments but his primary thesis is that everything, all that exists throughout all of creation is both from and for Christ.
I pray you find this message on Colossians 1:15-20 encouraging…
