In a series based on the theme of neighborliness, I’ve heard countless messages on themes such as selflessness, service, sacrifice, and other means to give of one’s time and energy to be involved and be helpful. Those themes aren’t bad, nor are they even remotely inappropriate. Those are great ways to be a better neighbor and to help build a stronger neighborhood. However, I think they skip an essential step.
In today’s message based on a Mr. Rogers’ poem, I reflect on the poem “Look & Listen” and argue that until we take the time to see and hear our neighbors, without judgement, criticism, or even questioning them, we can never really serve them effectively.
